In March 2010, Richmond Hill played host to the Clarkson Cup Championship, which was played out over two days (March 27 & 28) at the Elgin Barrow Arena. A crowd of close to 1,000 spectators packed the stands to watch the Brampton Thunder face off against the Minnesota Whitecaps in the Championship game. With a 4-0 win, the Whitecaps took home the Cup and wrote their place in the record books as the first American team to win the Clarkson Cup.
Often thought of as the Stanley Cup of women’s hockey, the Clarkson Cup is the ultimate championship for the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) and for female hockey players from around the world. It was donated and first awarded in 2009 by the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson who was in attendance for the event.
The Canadian Women's Hockey League is a not-for-profit organization that runs elite women's hockey in Canada and is dedicated to raising the profile of women’s hockey while providing a place where the best female hockey players in Canada can train and compete. It is the league that the majority of the Canadian and American Olympic Teams use to hone their skills for the international stage. The 2010 Clarkson Cup Championship featured many Olympians from Canada’s 2010 Women's Olympic Gold Medal winning team, including Kim St. Pierre, Caroline Ouellette, Jennifer Botterill and Cherie Piper, as well as Silver Medal winning American's Angela Ruggiero, Jenny Potter, Molly Engstrom and Julie Chu.
